New proof-of-work design targets idle AI GPUs with 32 GiB dataset
Cypherium says COLOSSUS-X would let data centers mine blockchain rewards between AI jobs, as one survey put average GPU use near 5% before optimization.
- Cypherium unveiled COLOSSUS-X on Oct. 22, a proof-of-work design that needs a 32 GiB memory dataset, the company said.
- A Cast AI report put average GPU utilization near 5% before optimization, according to AIwire, leaving most capacity unused.
- Cypherium said its roadmap, including independent security analysis, remains subject to implementation and validation, with no launch date given.
Cypherium, a New York-based blockchain company, unveiled COLOSSUS-X on Oct. 22, a proof-of-work design that requires a 32 GiB memory dataset so AI accelerators can mine rewards, as data center operators weigh how to pay for hardware.
The design targets a gap between spending and use. A Cast AI report cited by AIwire put average GPU utilization near 5% before optimization, and Cypherium argues that mining between AI jobs could recover some operating costs.
AI hardware sits idle while financing risks draw scrutiny
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said the rapid expansion of AI-related financing has created new exposures, according to a speech published Oct. 19 by the Bank for International Settlements.
The International Monetary Fund's October Global Financial Stability Report said free cash flows at hyperscalers are declining as they try to sustain large AI investment needs, Asia Times reported on Oct. 14.
Cast AI, a Kubernetes optimization vendor, reported enterprises run about 20 times more GPU capacity than they actively use, AIwire reported on Apr. 21. As a vendor estimate, the figure carries commercial interest.
Bitcoin's network hashrate fell 4% in the first quarter of 2026, its first decline since 2020, as miners such as IREN and Hive moved toward AI, DCD reported.
By the numbers
| Metric | Value | As of | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory dataset required by COLOSSUS-X | 32 GiB | Oct. 22, 2026 | Cypherium |
| Stated annual dataset growth | about 10% | Oct. 22, 2026 | Cypherium |
| Dataset size after five years at that rate | 51.5 GiB | Oct. 22, 2026 | Our calculation: 32 × 1.10^5 |
| Average GPU utilization before optimization | about 5% | Apr. 21, 2026 | AIwire |
| Enterprise GPU capacity versus use | about 20 times | Apr. 21, 2026 | AIwire |

COLOSSUS-X ties mining rewards to GPU memory
Bitcoin and similar networks rely on specialized ASIC hardware that generally cannot be repurposed for AI, the company said.
COLOSSUS-X instead requires a 32 GiB dataset that grows about 10% a year, making memory capacity and bandwidth central to mining, according to Cypherium. Not independently verified.
Cypherium said its roadmap adds a dual-track consensus pairing COLOSSUS-X with Proof-of-Useful-Training, and a compute reservoir that shifts capacity between mining and AI jobs.
Sky Guo, founder of Cypherium, said the aim is to turn idle GPU capacity into "a revenue-generating asset." The whitepaper also proposes a Cypherium Compute Index, an on-chain reference price for computing capacity.
At 10% annual growth, the dataset would reach about 51.5 GiB after five years (our calculation: 32 × 1.10^5).
"Financing that investment is essential," Bailey said of AI and robotics spending in the same speech. He added that AI safety and financial stability are becoming increasingly connected.
COLOSSUS-X is one proposal for recovering such costs, and Cypherium has not said it is running at scale.
How we got here
- Mar. 10, 2022: Cypherium announced it was listed in the Federal Reserve's FedNow Service Provider Showcase, IT Digest reported.
- Oct. 14, 2025: U.S. Patent No. 12,443,569 B2, covering validator committee selection, was issued to Cypherium Blockchain Inc.
- Apr. 1, 2026: Bitcoin's hashrate fell 4% in the first quarter, DCD reported.
- Oct. 13, 2026: The IMF's Global Financial Stability Report flagged falling hyperscaler cash flows, Asia Times reported.
What to watch after the announcement
IREN, which DCD reports has shifted from Bitcoin mining to AI cloud services, is estimated to report fiscal first-quarter results on Nov. 5, according to MarketBeat. The company has not confirmed the date.
If operators such as IREN report more AI revenue and less mining revenue, that would show which use of hardware pays. Cypherium has not given dates for hardware optimization, the dual-track system, the reservoir or security analysis.
How we reported this: Cypherium supplied the design details and quotes in an Oct. 22 release; they are not independently verified. Patent details were checked against the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office's Official Gazette. The 51.5 GiB figure is our calculation: 32 × 1.10^5.
