As of Oct. 28, 2026. EU status is taken from ESMA's interim MiCA register. Market shares come from CCData's September 2026 exchange review; company figures are labeled where they appear below.

Binance, OKX and Coinbase handled about 40.5% of centralized spot trading in September 2026, by our calculation from CCData data. Binance's 28.5% share was more than twice the other two combined.

Size no longer settles the comparison. Since July 1, 2026, the three differ most on where they may operate, what they disclose and their record with U.S. authorities.

How this market works

A centralized exchange matches buyers and sellers, holds their assets and charges a fee on each trade. The three here also run derivatives markets, custody, their own blockchains and, at Binance and OKX, an exchange token.

Trading is only part of the income. Coinbase said subscription and services, which include stablecoin and staking revenue, made up 48% of its net revenue in the second quarter of 2026.

Binance and OKX are private and do not publish financial statements. Coinbase files with the SEC.

From company pages and announcements. The Deribit deal closed Aug. 14, 2025, per The Block. Binance says it does not serve U.S. persons; xStocks are not offered in the U.S., according to Kraken parent Payward.

Why it matters now

The EU closed its transition window on July 1, 2026. ESMA told unauthorized providers on June 23 to stop onboarding EU clients and limit activity to an orderly exit.

Coinbase and OKX appear on ESMA's register. Binance does not: it withdrew its application in Greece on June 24 and said it would apply elsewhere.

ESMA and national regulators are now questioning Binance's use of the reverse-solicitation exemption to keep serving EU customers, the Financial Times reported on Oct. 1, according to Reuters.

In the U.S., the SEC's Innovation Exemption of Sept. 17 lets venues trade tokenized U.S. stocks. OKXICE, OKX's venture with Intercontinental Exchange, filed notice on Oct. 4, and 22 issuers had objected by Oct. 23.

Binance led both spot and derivatives in September. OKX ranked second in both, and Coinbase overtook Bybit for third in spot, according to CCData.

OKX's derivatives volume equals about 15.5% of the month's $3.94 trillion centralized total, by our calculation.

Coinbase reported a record 10.3% share of cryptocurrency trading volume for the second quarter of 2026, measured across spot and derivatives. Revenue was $1.22 billion and the net loss $359.5 million, according to its shareholder letter.

From each company's reserves page or quarterly filing. A reserve ratio compares on-chain holdings with customer balances; it does not audit liabilities or the company's own finances.

OKX's 48th monthly report showed $29.4 billion in primary assets. Binance's report covers 688,573 BTC of customer bitcoin, about 4.8 times OKX's, by our calculation.

Coinbase publishes no Merkle-tree report. As a listed company, it reports customer assets in audited statements.

How buyers choose

  • Authorization where you live - a license in one country does not cover another; check ESMA's register in the EU, VARA's in Dubai and MAS's directory in Singapore.
  • Proof of assets - monthly reserve reports show holdings against balances, not liabilities; ask whether an auditor reviews both.
  • Fees at your tier - entry-level taker fees run from 0.10% to 0.60% among these three; ask for the rate at your expected volume.
  • Liquidity in your pairs - market share is a total; check order-book depth for the pairs you trade.
  • Enforcement record - two of the three have pleaded guilty to U.S. charges; ask which monitoring or consultant terms still apply.
  • Product reach - stock tokens, derivatives and staking vary by country; confirm what your account can access before moving funds.

What to watch

  • Oct. 29, 2026 - Coinbase reports third-quarter results.
  • Early November 2026 - objection windows from OKXICE's Oct. 4 notice close; the venue has set no launch date.
  • February 2027 - OKX's outside compliance consultant term ends, according to the Justice Department.

Methodology and limits

Universe: Binance, OKX and Coinbase, the three largest centralized exchanges by spot volume in CCData's September 2026 review. Bybit, fourth, is a candidate for a later update. Sources: regulator registers (ESMA, VARA), Justice Department releases, SEC filings, company reserve and fee pages, CoinGecko and CCData, each linked above. Not opened: OKX's U.S. state licenses, Abu Dhabi entries for OKX and Coinbase, Coinbase Advanced fees, which require sign-in, and the MAS directory entry for OKX SG. Binance and OKX publish no financial statements. Derived numbers: combined spot share, OKX's derivatives share, the bitcoin multiple and the fee multiple.
